Work History:

April 2005 – Present
Scitec Group Limited, Harrow HA3
Technical Consultant

In April 2005, after spending two years as a self employed contractor to Scitec Group, I joined the company as a full time employee charged with the role of formalising the service and support aspect of the business and running the small technical team. Scitec Group are an IT VAR with a number of channel partnership relationships including HP, IBM, Cisco, and Microsoft.

During my time under contract to Scitec I migrated the in-house accounts system (Sage Line 50) to Datafile, including all the data conversion and analysis of the business process models and their implementation as procedures within the Datafile System.

General responsibilities:

  • Systems Analysis of client requirements and preparation of detailed proposals for a broad range of IT solutions.
  • Co-ordinating with client's internal IT staff and other third party companies to organise and implement new systems or upgrades and to assist in troubleshooting.
  • Advising clients on a full range of hardware and software requirements.
  • Hardware/Software support for clients.
  • Creating interface routines to translate data in different formats to and from the accounting system.
  • Specifying and sourcing IT related purchases for internal use and for clients.
  • As head of technical, I also oversee administration and support of the internal network and back end systems, including accounting systems, webservers and data backup policies.

October 2001 - March 2005
Self-Employed - Freelance Consultant.

Offering project management, consultancy, system requirements analysis, web design, installations, cabling and software support.

Clients included my previous full time employer - Blue-i, who recognized that although I was no longer employed by them, they still needed to have the support for their systems that I was able to provide.
Another regular client was Scitec Group Limited, who utilised me as a specialist/troubleshooter for Windows Networks and Exchange mail servers. I also designed some basic websites for several companies.

March 2000 - September 2001
Fone Range (UK) Plc & Blue-i (International) Limited, London NW10
Information Systems Manager.

Fone Range (UK) Plc was a mobile phone accessories distribution company that supplied directly to the trade. Ranked 27th in The Times 100 fastest growing companies list in December 2000, and won Best Mobile Accessories Company at MobilExpo 2000. The CEO and MD jointly won the London regional heat of the Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award 2000. At the end of the financial year in March 2000 the company reported a turnover of £13m and employed over 150 staff. Initially reporting to the Operations Director, then later directly to the MD.

Responsibilities included:

  • Took over project to implement a new DRP/ERP system (ASW) to replace the Datafile system that was in use.
  • Planned and executed a training schedule for users of the new system.
  • Liased with the software vendors to specify, approve and implement changes based on end user feedback while keeping within budgetary constraints.
  • Data conversion from Datafile.
  • Audited all hardware, including network infrastructure, to ensure that it was of sufficient standards to run the new system. Specified, sourced and installed replacement equipment as required.
  • Organised the installation of a leased line from our main office to our ISP.
  • Organised installation of suitable security systems for permanent connection to the internet utilising a Cisco router and Checkpoint Firewall-1 running on a Nokia IP330 box.
  • Organised and assisted a third party company to install structured cabling in a newly acquired 107,000 sq. foot warehouse in Leicester for voice and data.
  • Specified, sourced and installed IT Equipment for the new warehouse and other subsidiaries offices.
  • Implemented a ISDN based WAN linking the main office, the new warehouse and a new subsidiary’s office to enable access to the new ASW system, public data areas, email and scheduling systems.
  • Full Helpdesk Support to all sites.
  • Administration of NT, Netware and AS/400 networks across the group.
  • Data security and backup policies.

Up until September 2000 I was the sole member of the Information Systems department, at which point I was able to select and recruit a trainee to assist me.

I was also responsible for the strategic Information Systems planning, particularly it’s relevance from a business perspective, and it’s impact on business and operational processes.

During my time there I also implemented an Accounts and Distribution system using Datafile for one of the company's subsidiaries. Working closely with the Finance Director of the subsidiary company we were able to implement a fully working system well within deadline.
The number of parallel projects that were running when I first joined the company tested all my project management, technical and support skills, particularly in understanding the business objectives at the root of queries.

As a result of a severe downturn across the whole cellular phone and accessories industry Fone Range (UK) Plc became over exposed to the overheads of its recent rapid expansion and in the early part of 2001 the company went into Administration.

In March 2001, Blue-i (International) Ltd (a subsidiary of Fone Range), restructured to enable it to continue as an independent business entity. Blue-i took over the parent company’s premises and offered continuation of contracts to a select number of staff. My role there was essentially the same as Fone Range (UK) Plc, although there were fewer staff and computers to administer and support.

During the transition I was responsible for reorganising the I.T. infrastructure to fit the new company and also designed two websites for the company, www.blue-i.com and www.idyourface.com.

March 1995 - February 2000
Software Connection, London W3

Software Connection are a small company specialising in systems consultancy, implementation and contract support. Duties involved providing a full technical helpdesk to all the company’s clients, supporting them in a full range of desktop applications, server operating systems and primarily the Datafile Software range of financial management systems, including their on site installation, configuration and ongoing administration.

Duties included:

  • Analysis of client requirements and preparation of proposals for a system solution.
  • Implementation of Datafile Accounts Systems for clients, including data migration and user training.

  • Helpdesk services for clients
  • Administration of the internal network, including data backup policies.
  • Hardware maintenance.
  • Specifying and sourcing IT related purchases for internal use.

The company’s small size provided me with a great deal of experience in a full range of IT responsibilities, from basic support through to consultancy meetings, systems analysis and preparing complete solution proposals.
The wide diversity in its client base, ranging from single users working from home, to multi-million pound companies with sites across the UK and abroad, gave me a broad exposure to the situations and complexities involved in implementing and supporting scalable IT solutions.

Working in this environment taught me extremely good communication skills. This proved invaluable to co-ordinate efforts efficiently as part of a team, and to report to non-technical people such as Finance or Managing Directors. In addition, it provided clients with the reassurance that their problems were being handled with the utmost urgency and attention to detail. The role also developed my ability to effectively manage my time, to prioritise calls, delegate where appropriate, and to make the most of the resources available.
